The Ranked-Stock Accounting

One question ran underneath several families: how much of the book’s talk of higher and lower human stocks is just the wording of its time — and how much is built into the story itself? So we counted. All of it.

How the count was made

A complete census, not a sample: every passage in the whole book that ranks human peoples, quoted word for word from the archived 1955 text and sorted into two classes. Wording — the era’s ranking vocabulary, the common coin of the anthropology of the day; the passage could be reworded and lose nothing structural. Architecture — the ranking is load-bearing: a plan that calls for graded stocks, a carrier race chosen to lift the others, a program of selective breeding and elimination stated as planetary policy. Standing against them, counted in the same pass, are the counter passages — those that say the opposite. Exclusions were recorded as carefully as inclusions, and the census was signed on November 6, 2026.

The count

Ranked — wording85
Ranked — architecture178

The answer, in one line: one-third wording, two-thirds architecture. And the architecture is one connected descent machine, running the length of the book: the plan (Papers 51–52) calls for graded stocks; Paper 64 delivers the stocks; the Adamic papers (73–82) supply the carrier race chosen to lift the others; the program papers (68–72, 83–84) administer the breeding and elimination; and the religion papers (88–92) apply the ladder to the faiths. The Andite papers alone hold 129 of the 263 ranked passages, 105 of them architecture.

Against its era

Judged against its own time, the ranking is in kind the era’s ranking science at its ordinary pitch — its median, neither its vanguard nor its fringe. In degree it exceeds the era’s median in specified places: where it distributes even spiritual capacity by descent; where it prescribes elimination and enslavement as planetary law (75:1.1–1.2; 79:2.7–2.8; 80:1.7, 3.9, 5.5); and where it addresses eugenic instruction to present-day readers (99:3.5). And it lags its era where the era’s own fieldwork — Boas, Malinowski, Schapera — had already refuted the rankings it repeats, and it never catches up with the statements on race the world issued in 1950 and 1951, inside the book’s own publication window.

The counterweight

The 47 counter passages are not scattered evenly. They stand thickest on the ground in the Jesus papers — Part IV holds only 8 ranked passages (2 of them architecture) against 11 counter — the densest counter region in the book, and the place where the ranking itself nearly vanishes. The type specimen of the counter voice stands at 64:6.27: every people of exactly the same standing before God, a Father who is no respecter of persons. Notably, no declaration of that type exists inside the Andite heartland itself — only mitigations within ranked paragraphs (82:6.1; 80:9.15). The same paper, Paper 64, both ranks the races and declares them equal; the accounting records both facts in the same ink, because both are true.

How the edition handles it

Under the editor’s ruling (OP1, signed November 6, 2026), every ranking word in the revised text stands verbatim — nothing is struck out and nothing is silently softened. The truth goes beside the text: a companion-layer gloss stands after 64:6.14, cross-referenced where the ranking recurs, and two stock-nouns were re-anchored where the original’s own usage allowed it. A reader of the Consolidated Edition always knows which layer he is reading.

One verification caveat stands in that file: the Papers 74/77 passages rest on cross-check with spot-verified anchors (77:2.4, 74:5.4, 89:5.3), one worker on the census having been rate-limited mid-pass.
